You just bought your brand new real estate stationery, and it’s time to put it to use to market your services, but where do you begin?
Keep it Short
People will grant you their attention when you take the time to send them a letter (especially if you add that all-important hand-written PS), but they won’t give you much, so avoid a lengthy letter.
Use Bullets
The digital age has encouraged readers to expect easy-to-scan copy. Even magazines, newspapers and physical books have followed the Internet’s lead on this one. Your letter should indicate the main points, say them and move on.
Put a Real Stamp On It
It’s worth a few extra cents to send out a letter that LOOKS like a letter, instead of a sales gimmick. Add one to your envelope.
Need Content Ideas?
Be sure it SAYS something. If you contact them by mail and the information they consider worthless, they will probably not open the next letter from you and they certainly will not call you. Give them news that will be important to them (a drop in mortgage rates, an invigorated local sales market, a new school opening that changes the district zoning) and be sure to offer to help them if they would like to learn more.
Direct them to your website (or even a specific blog with additional information related to what you are telling them in the letter. The letter is an introduction, an invitation to learn more using your resources (either the info you carry around in your head, or information you have outlined and uploaded to your website.) Be the helpful agent.
Enclose a Business Card
Although your letterhead will have your contact information, be sure to enclose a business card as well. You want to make it easy for them to contact you at a later date and having your card will be easier for them than trying to store a letter with your information.
Sign the Letter and add a PS
Use a contrasting ink color (nothing radical, blue or blue-black is fine) and sign the letter manually. You also need to add a quick PS with the same inkpen. It doesn’t take much personalization to create a great impression. If you know the recipient personally, indicate that. Some suggestions might be:
- “Hope you and Joe are doing well”
- “I saw Janie at the last softball game, she’s got quite a swing!”
- “The board did a great job on the benefit this year!”
If you don’t personally know the recipient, you still need to include a PS:
- “I hope to hear from you soon”
- “I’d love to help you find your next home”
- “Considering selling? I can help you determine the value of your current home”
Using a short, informative letter that is easy to read and personalizing it with a real stamp, your signature and a quick PS will get your sales letter noticed and read. It will also help you to strengthen your existing farm and develop a relationship with new additions to your mailing list.
